EP Review: Charlotte Devlin - sonicinvoluntaryreflex

Charlotte Devlin’s new EP “sonicinvoluntaryreflex”  is creative, genre-hopping and experimental in the BEST way possible. This was my first review of an experimental EP where I felt everything moves freely between sounds and ideas without ever feeling messy, and Charlotte has definitely gained my lifelong support.

The project opens with the relaxed song “Painting Some Thing”, which gives me a chill feeling before slowly shifting into more experimental electronic territory. As it progresses, the EP introduces sounds from everyday life - water in a cup, paint brushes moving, turning ordinary objects into part of the music, this sounds risky but I feel the EP remains cohesive and intentional.

At its core, the EP feels introspective. The production is electronic-leaning and intentionally raw, allowing small details to stand out, especially the bells in “Metallic Synthesis”, which add subtle texture without overpowering the track. There is little focus on lyrics, but this creates space for emotion to come through in sound instead, giving the project an almost nostalgic feel. Devlin’s vocals, while minimal, sort of mirror this; light and bubbly, blending seamlessly into the production.

The standout track for me was, “I’m cooking soup but I’d rather be dancing”, as it captures the EP’s playful experimentation perfectly. Built around the sounds of pots and pans, it manages to function as both a clever concept and a fully realised dance track.

By the end, the EP feels like a quiet journey through a magical world built from texture and imagination. I’d recommend it for anyone that liked the production of Eusexua by FKA twigs
