Is Mia Nicolai really “sharing space among the stars”?
Mia Nicolai’s newest EP “sharing space among the stars” is a true pop anthem. Mia is a singer, songwriter, and actress who grew up in a creative, musical family while she started piano, violin, as well as drama and ballet classes at a very young age.
She started her career by releasing original songs “Set Me Free,” “Mutual Needs,” “Dream Go,” and “Loop.” In 2023 she gained major attention when she (and Dion Cooper) represented the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest with “Burning Daylight.”
Her music lives somewhere between classic pop and alternative influences, often mixing emotional lyrics with atmospheric and synth-pop sounds, and her most recent EP is exactly this. In just five songs she explores happy pop, sad pop, electrical and synth sounds, and breathy vocals. She created a full atmosphere that drags you into a dreamy, fun mood, even a little euphoric. She explores feelings like love, ambition, spotlight, and sensitivity.
Her first track, “chasing lullabies,” is a perfect intro to the EP. It starts soft and then hits with a great beat drop, like a classic pop song. The lyrics “I’m chasing lullabies / And that’s why I feel so alive” make you feel alive as well, like chasing your dreams. And not just that, dreams as the purpose of life.
She continues with “nothing compares to this feeling,” which leans into synth pop. The electrical sounds and breathy singing build the song in so many layers. The song focuses on love and living in the moment, which is a message everyone can connect with. After her line, “So we sat in silence,” she adds a short break of silence, which is a classic and always works. Pop stars like Olivia on her tour, for example, did that. The chorus of the song is very catchy.
“spend the night,” continues the pop sound, with some more carefree vibes. It fits the EP perfectly, while it is more delicate and softer than the others. She continues with this delicacy and her song “delicate heart“, in which you can hear rain and a bit of street sounds. These are the things that make a produced song so alive, when it‘s more than just a plain melody with vocals. It has a slow build-up, from calm to slightly louder. The entire process of the song is a closed circle; from the title to the song itself, it all matches. It states to be delicate, and the melody is actually that. Her lyrics explore the sensitivity of a “delicate heart”. She sings “Lately I’m terrified of love / Cos I still got a paper cut on my delicate heart”, which is a beautiful imagery. A paper cut is so tiny but can hurt a lot, a tiny piece of doubt can make a sensitive heart shatter.
She closes her EP with the title track, “sharing space among the stars,” tying back to the star imagery from the first track and the EP title. It is a perfect ending, leaving you floating in the kind of “celebrity glow.”
I’d suggest her EP to listeners of Taylor Swift, Gracie Abrams, Olivia Rodrigo, or Chappell Roan. It reminds me personally of 1989 (Taylor Swift) and pop songs that stick in your head for ages because they are so fun.
Allover, this EP was a classic pop EP and everyone loves that. And yes, Mia Nicosia is definitely “sharing space among the stars”.
