TYGERMYLK new dreamy indie album “Local Girl, Always Tired”

Written by Anna

“Open up the door and let me in,” sings TYGERMYLK in the opening track for their newest album “Local Girl, Always Tired.” It is the best introduction to a dreamy indie album. It talks about relationships, self-reflection and everyday experiences.

The album goes through various moods, themes and sounds. Throughout the entire album though, it will provide the listener a feeling of comfort. It is honest and raw, but even the anger feels muted and soft. The instruments support the ambience that the lyrics already created. The guitar and drums, some specific standout instruments like piano keys or electric guitar, are the key elements in the melodies. It is almost a mainly acoustic album. Especially instrumentally, the album stands out, with its mixture of indie sounds. It combines different instruments, while it sticks to repetition of certain sounds.

The album offers a unique sound with simple lyrics but the ones that stayed in my mind were mentioned in the last song, “Drawing A Line”: “I’m not your mother, you’re not my child.” Both parts of the sentence say the same thing from a different perspective, in simple words. It is so simple, that it almost seems insignificant, but this is exactly why it is so outstanding. It is something that repeats itself in all of TYGERMYLK’s songs. But let’s dive deeper into the songs themselves.

The album literally “Open[s] Up” in a very nostalgic and soft sound, highlighted by guitar chords. The following title track, “Local Girl, Always Tired”, features some more electric sounds, like E-guitar. You might recognize sounds from the pop-rock and alternative music genres. It has a strong “teenage dirtbag” vibe. It is not a rebel song but it keeps the lyrics simple and relatable like “Cause everybody’s searching for a reason”. It talks about finding your way in life, a universal experience, of all of us. Another song that stuck in my head was “Confetti”. It expresses vulnerability in an open way, sticking to very simple lyrics about falling in love. The album dives deeper into the vulnerability and intimacy with the song “The Deverillis”. “I only wanna share it with you”. The song that had the biggest impact in my mind was “Emergency Contact”, it just blew me away. It has a perfect tension between the somewhat whispery voice and the  melody of the piano. It binds you like a good thriller that you don’t want to stop in the middle. It is definitely my personal favorite.

My take is that this album is a mixture of personal experiences, daydreaming and emotions — just as simple and yet complicated as any of our lives. It has a variety of themes it discusses while it sticks to the same genre and key melodies. The repetitive tones are good, as it brands TYGERMYLK a certain way, but I expected a bit more variety in the melodies. Sadly, some songs like “Natali” got forgotten after the first couple of listens of the album because there were stronger, more present songs.

I would recommend this album to listeners of Noah Kahan, Alice Phoebe Lou and Maisie Peters.

The album is a soft escape into a dreamy yet very real world. Some songs are to dream with, some will just awaken your mind and make you think.
